Rather than putting earbuds in your ears (regardless of whether it is an iPod, an iPhone, or some other device), pay attention to the world around you. If you are exercising, notice the sights and sounds that are around you. Consider talking to the people around you at home or at the coffee shop.
Don’t get me wrong. I love listening to music or books when I run. It motivates me, keeps my attention and probably increases the frequency of exercising. But, I have also noticed that when I don't plug in on my run, I see, hear, feel, think and experience more. I am more in touch with my body and my spirit and even can focus more on the actual experience of my run.
So, just for today, unplug and see how it feels. Maybe, if it feels good, try it again in a few days or a week. It might just start a trend.
